Ep 6. An Imperfect Woman: Eleanor Was NOT a Good Friend | Self Worth, Girl Code & Self Sabotage
Tay Fawumi (00:01.806)
Ha ha ha.
Tonée Earle (00:02.271)
So do we wanna do shop?
Tay Fawumi (00:05.998)
I feel I do that all the time. and I and I just got some hand tattoos, so I don't want to sh yeah. I'll show you them later. You show ew, they're in the second skin. I know. No, it's like a it's like a little sun. where am I going? It's like a little sun. And then I got some arrows. I I and then I got a big back tat. I'll have Julia send you a picture later. I am a thug.
Tonée Earle (00:10.313)
Hey, okay. Show them off. Show them off.
Tonée Earle (00:17.14)
Ew. my god, what does it say?
Tonée Earle (00:24.195)
Uh-huh. You are addicted to tattoos, girl. my gosh.
You are a thug. my God.
Tay Fawumi (00:36.066)
I it's a couple more I wanted that I'ma stop for now.
Tonée Earle (00:38.775)
Okay. Maybe 'cause I'm a thug. What'd you do now?
Tay Fawumi (00:44.642)
What else? What else we could do for Eleanor? I'm giving her the side eye. Like, really? Your best friend man? You was plotting. Yeah, side eye.
Tonée Earle (00:58.369)
Logan
Tay Fawumi (01:02.892)
Yeah, she was she was giving really thirsty and I hate and I was like, Why the black girl gotta be thirsty?
Tonée Earle (01:03.522)
Okay.
Right. Why did a black girl always gotta w and and why is Carrie Washington always playing these roles where she wants to be somebody's mistress?
Tay Fawumi (01:19.565)
Agree. I agree. Now I do love that they didn't make her like ghetto, you know, you know, living below the poverty line. I'm glad she came from she f I'm a fluent family. I'm glad that, you know, it wasn't giving like poor black girl who was thirsty for the rich white boy, but
Tonée Earle (01:25.237)
Right. Right.
Tonée Earle (01:37.026)
Right.
Right.
But it was it was given. But anyway, let me do a quick introduction. All right. Welcome back to The Bar and the Brain with Tone Earl and Taylor Fawumi. We are here with another exciting film series to review. We are gonna break this one down a little bit differently, though. We are gonna go based off of the interesting characters that we saw in the series Imperfect Woman that is streaming currently on Apple TV.
Tay Fawumi (01:42.071)
I was just so mad. It was given. Yes. Yes.
Tonée Earle (02:11.691)
Hey, let's talk about thoughts first. Tell me, what were your thoughts just overall on this series?
Tay Fawumi (02:19.347)
It was truly like an attention grabber. I do believe it is a slow burn. I feel like the first episode, they almost lost me. Episode two, I'm like, okay, they're starting to get into it. And then I think episode three and on just had you had you locked in. So I I'm glad I stuck it out because at first I was going to just forego the series. Cause I was like, mm, it's it's okay, but it's a little boring.
Tonée Earle (02:31.169)
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (02:36.63)
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (02:44.319)
Yeah. Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (02:46.463)
But I'm glad I stuck it out because it was really good and it took you through all the twists and turns.
Tonée Earle (02:51.979)
It did. I I too thought it was a slow burn. I was sitting there like, what does Taylor got me watching? And a little murder mystery. But as as if when it finally got to a point where I felt like I was starting to get more pieces that I didn't have before to help me solve who done it, I I became a little bit more interested. Obviously, this show has some really great characters in it. I mean, read my little list that I made. so
Tay Fawumi (02:59.103)
Ha ha ha.
Tonée Earle (03:17.911)
The first character we will be highlighting today is gonna be Eleanor, played by Carrie Washington. But it also had it just this just really had a really good great cast. We also had Elizabeth Moth from Handmaid's Tale, who played Mary, who I really think she clear she killed this role so much so that I hated her character. I hated her character, but we'll get into that in episode two. then we had Kate Mara, who plays Nancy, who, you know, spoiler alert, is the person who we're trying to figure out.
Tay Fawumi (03:39.539)
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (03:45.588)
Mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (03:47.969)
what happened to her. and then we have two men that I'm excited to kind of talk about when we get to them in episode four or of the series. and that's gonna be Robert Hennessy's character who was married to Nancy and that's played by Joel Kinnanum. And then we had Howard was played by Corey Soul. And I actually thought he his acting was really well done too. so okay.
Tay Fawumi (03:49.341)
Yeah, who murdered her?
Tay Fawumi (04:06.907)
Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (04:12.007)
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (04:14.881)
Getting into our first character that we're going to review, Carrie Washington's character El er Eleanor. Overall thoughts on just her as a character.
Tay Fawumi (04:25.661)
Overall, I I thought like I love that she was like a boss CEO of her own company and she, you know, she had these, you know, lifelong friends from college and they still keep up with each other. I love that, you know, they were doing things together and it just seemed like they made their own little family. So I love seeing that. I love that, you know, she appeared.
Tonée Earle (04:34.017)
Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (04:49.778)
That she wasn't like thirsty for no man. And you know, she had looked had the little cute little boy toy at the office and he was really thirsty for her. But sh it was giving like she wasn't tripping on him. And she was just, yeah, she was just, but she was just like, Okay, you're beautiful and all that. But she was like, We need to keep this casual and like don't be doing too much in the office. So she really was just giving boss chick vibes, and I really loved that. But I later found out she was a simp and I was really disappointed.
Tonée Earle (04:52.171)
Right.
Tonée Earle (04:56.201)
Right. Yes. That beautiful chocolate man.
Tonée Earle (05:07.997)
Right. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
Tonée Earle (05:18.051)
She was making some really ver like you said, disappointing moves. Like I and I and I don't know, I just feel like whenever we get a series that's
looks like it's going to be good and you have your token black characters. Shout out to them for putting Leslie Odom Jr. in this sh series because I love him so much. so it was nice to see him as Eleanor's brother. We won't be doing a character review on him, but it was nice to see him. But anytime you see these black characters and they have some form of wealth, they're like doing well off for themselves, it always seems like they just make the dumbest decisions. It's like black people can't be wealthy and smart.
Like if they're gonna be wealthy, they're gonna be s making dumbass decisions. I'll never understand that.
Tay Fawumi (05:59.29)
Right.
Tay Fawumi (06:04.292)
And you know, also Shirley Ralph was her mom. Boss move. She looked she played that part. So I did love that that she had like some good black actresses and actors that was like a part of her family and just, you know, give you the whole character of Eleanor. So I feel like it gives you a good background on kind of like how Eleanor seemed like she was sheltered a little bit. Like mom didn't play doing games. It seems like she went to all the really good schools and
Tonée Earle (06:07.817)
Right. Right. She did.
Tonée Earle (06:15.475)
Yeah. Yeah.
Tonée Earle (06:21.331)
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (06:27.605)
Right, right. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (06:32.226)
Mom was on her back because it seemed like they were a really affluent family and they didn't want her making you know dumb decisions that will negatively impact the name. The boud is it boot boudjoir? bordeaux, like like l it was definitely French. I remember that. It was like a French last name and she was just so worried about, you know, all the things when it was coming out. Boucher. Mm-hmm. The Boucher name.
Tonée Earle (06:35.861)
Right, right.
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
The boudoir, I think. Bordeaux, what was the name?
Tonée Earle (06:57.133)
Brochet, Bouche, Boucher, yeah, bouche, yeah.
Tay Fawumi (07:02.191)
So I remember just like watching that whole dynamic, which obviously we gave we got a little bit of it in the first couple episodes, but we learned more about the family towards the end of the season. but it just, you know, I love that they gave her a whole family unit. Unfortunately, spoiler alert, her father, I wanna say passed away, right? And like they were like, you know, mom and brother all supporting one another because dad passed away.
Tonée Earle (07:09.077)
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (07:13.014)
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (07:22.721)
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (07:27.519)
Yeah. Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (07:28.975)
So I did love that she didn't come from a broken home. None of the black stereotypes that, you know, are depicted in our films sometimes. I'm glad that that wasn't the case.
Tonée Earle (07:33.611)
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Yeah, no, so am I. I I I mean, again, not sure why dad couldn't be in the picture, but I I guess I guess I guess we gotta take a win as a win, right? Like at least it wasn't a broken home. She had a daddy. not not sure how involved he was, but she had a daddy. But you know what? That brings me to the fact that potentially she may have had some daddy issues because
Tay Fawumi (07:52.344)
Re. She had a dad, so we love that.
Tonée Earle (08:07.003)
One, she is an older woman and and and I do not knock any women who do not have the desire to get married or settle down or have kids or do any of that. I think you should go and live your best life in whatever way that looks like. But this woman wasn't just, you know, d sleeping around and and living her best life. She clearly was envisioning herself with a man.
Just somebody else's mate.
Tay Fawumi (08:37.771)
And that's the disappointing part for me. Like, I love me some Carrie Washington. Love Carrie Washington down, but I just hope she doesn't put herself in this mistress box for all of her films because it just always seems like she's gunning for somebody else's man. Like, why? She's so beautiful, she's so smart, she's articulate, she's got it going on, she's a CEO. She can literally have any man she wants. And you want your best friend's man, like, I'm giving you the side eye.
Tonée Earle (08:42.145)
Yeah. Yeah.
Tonée Earle (08:48.246)
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (09:06.977)
Honestly
Tay Fawumi (09:09.118)
And the thing is, once we watch the show, we later learned that whole time she introduced him to Nancy and she's loved him since she was 18 years old, why didn't you just go smack? Why would you put your best friend on him if you knew he was the love of your life or like the man you wanted to be with? Why would you?
Tonée Earle (09:31.767)
I think she was infatuated with him. I think he clearly was I think Robert was clearly in love with his wife. You saw that from the beginning. his family was a piece of work. but I think Robert and Eleanor had a great friendship. And I think sometimes
Women may not want to ruin that by going by you know, going smack and and trying to see what could happen. And so I think that's probably why she didn't see anything with it. It it's it's very much giving me like, you would be better for my friend Nancy because she's had a rough life and she deserves love. and she really just didn't want to ruin the friendship because she because I felt like Eleanor was just like really close with Nancy the most. Like I felt like you know, close with her daughter and all that stuff.
Which which is why I wanna know I wanna know your thoughts on Eleanor sleeping with her dead best friend's husband, not but a month after old girl body been laid to rest.
Tay Fawumi (10:46.666)
Wanna give Eleanor and Robert the benefit of the doubt in a sense of grief affects you so differently. Everybody grieves differently. And I do think in a s in a in a in a you know in a time of heated passion of them both grieving her, you know, being around one another, supporting one another, taking her things, all this different things. I think the emotions were just high. And honestly, they probably had the sexual tension.
Tonée Earle (10:52.195)
Mm.
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (11:15.315)
for years and of course never did anything about it because you are married to my best friend. Now she dead and gone. There's no barrier other than obviously like your ethic ethics barrier, but your morals and values. But you know, when emotions are high, you don't you don't be thinking about you don't be thinking about that you just be thinking about your body parts. And like that's unfortunately what happened.
Tonée Earle (11:28.791)
Morals. Yeah. Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (11:44.69)
But do I think it was done out of malicious intent? No. But I feel like Loki Robert was plotting on her. That's what that's what it felt like. Yeah, because my thing is he initiated everything because if you remember, he invited her to go to the opera, which I thought was random. And she shut him down at first. And then hear then hear her ass come, pull up in the black.
Tonée Earle (11:56.215)
You think so? Hmm.
Tonée Earle (12:07.393)
Damn.
And that cute little puppy.
Tay Fawumi (12:12.837)
That cute little outfit looking like she going on a date. Ma'am
Tonée Earle (12:17.035)
And was and was going on a date. She was. And they was holding hands. No, and that to me, I d so cause you you the kind one. Anybody who knows us knows Taylor's is sweetheart and it takes a million years to get through to me. so for me it's a no no bad Eleanor. Why are you sleeping with your dead best friend husband? Why while her daughter
Tay Fawumi (12:19.641)
Yep, and and holding hands. Mm.
Tay Fawumi (12:41.671)
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (12:46.293)
is also grieving the loss of her mother, who she treated like crap. Like
Tay Fawumi (12:50.447)
Yeah. I mean it it was still a no for me, but I'm just I'm just giving another perspective in the sense of like I have recognized that as a therapist, I recognize right. I I know people grieve, I know people grieve differently. it would be a hell to the no for me too, because my thing is I don't know, I'd be scared you gonna pinch me or you gonna haunt me or you're ca yeah, like I just don't want no smoke.
Tonée Earle (12:58.701)
Hey, don't grieve for me in that way when I'm gone. Don't grieve for me.
Tonée Earle (13:13.111)
Bro, I'm coming back. I'm coming back.
Tay Fawumi (13:17.606)
wanna smoke with the afterlife because I believe in all that. So you you hunching you hunching on my man like while I'm not even all the way buried yet.
Tonée Earle (13:28.141)
Girl, three three days dead. Three days day. You ain't even see if I could come back, bro. What's the problem?
Tay Fawumi (13:35.956)
No smoke. So it would be a no for me. And then also, like, I don't know. I feel like, you know, I love all of my best friends' partners as like family. So I wouldn't even be like, I don't there is no sexual or intimacy attraction to any of my friends' partners because it's just like there is that's like like you know, you guys are family to me. So I mean
Tonée Earle (13:36.919)
That's crazy.
Tonée Earle (13:53.555)
Right, right. They my brothers. Right.
Exactly.
Tay Fawumi (14:01.317)
Thought I mean her daughter is her goddaughter and like all these different things. So it's just like, but the thing is, it's that history part and the fact that this is what she always wanted. And I just hated I hated it for our girl because after they did that and you know, they released whatever to the media, he really took a step back from her and she was given like, We're gonna be together and we're gonna figure this out. And he was just like, My lawyers told me to stop talking to you.
Tonée Earle (14:04.321)
Right.
Tonée Earle (14:09.26)
Right.
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (14:28.573)
As they should have, because y his daughter posts the fact that they were sleeping together while there's an active murder investigation going on for her dead best friend and his dead wife. Now, hmm, what would the thought process be to an investigator when the best friend and husband end up sleeping together right after the person dies? That'd be my prime suspects. I'd I'd think they were in koots.
Tay Fawumi (14:46.255)
That's right.
Tonée Earle (15:00.547)
That would just be the that's just the dumbest thing you could do. And I felt like Eleanor was not acknowledging that. Like for for one, you went to work. She went to work the next day, and everybody's kikiing. Everybody's laughing and whispering. And she's trying to figure out well, what's going on? Shows her the TikTok. You go straight to the man's house. Mind you, she comes from money. So I would think the first thing I would have done was call my family and been like, yo, this is.
Tay Fawumi (15:16.141)
Yeah,
Tonée Earle (15:28.727)
This is crazy, this didn't happen, yada yada yada.
Tay Fawumi (15:31.171)
They was doing it behind the scenes. This rem I think that the I think s brother was already calling her like your mother's gonna murder murder you. You about to be next.
Tonée Earle (15:34.251)
They they were. Thank God. Was fixing the issue.
And for her to go, bro, for her to go to the house, I I really just felt like there was so there was so many social dynamics about Eleanor. Being the only black woman in this, like main character, black woman in this series, I did not like how they did my girl. I just did not like how they did her. I just felt like she she she's this boss woman, she's running foundations, she's getting awards.
Tay Fawumi (16:04.183)
Me neither.
Tonée Earle (16:09.623)
Sh clearly career-wise, she's no DEI hire. Like she's she's she's doing good for herself. But then the love aspect, and so th this was the question I had for you. That love aspect, and I mean, I think all of Nancy's friends got some real issues the way they were.
I don't even know what the they were so infatuated with Nancy. Like, like Eleanor wanted her husband, Mary won her life. so I'm wondering: like, is there a diagnosis for this? Is there a definition for kind of the ways that Eleanor moved? So I mean, and I know you did mention grief, but if if we could put grief aside, acknowledging that Eleanor was pining after that man before.
Tay Fawumi (16:32.247)
Mm-hmm.
Wanted her life.
Tay Fawumi (16:50.402)
Mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (16:57.727)
Nancy passed away. What is that just clear plain jealousy? Like, how would we define it?
Tay Fawumi (17:05.779)
Honestly, we don't have like a lot of her background. So I feel like I would be it would be hard to just diagnose her based just on the series because they we have a little bit of her background, but not enough where I feel like I could like confidently make a diagnosis. I would definitely say as confident as she portrays, I feel like she lacks cal she lacks self-esteem, self-worth.
Tonée Earle (17:12.491)
Right.
Tonée Earle (17:20.258)
Right.
Tonée Earle (17:24.119)
Right.
Tonée Earle (17:31.021)
No.
Tay Fawumi (17:33.236)
Because I feel like she would not have been able to been played by Robert like a fiddle if she had some self worth. Cause my thing is, you can have the desire. Like, you know, I'm not going to even front or I'm not going to even fault her for having the desire because it seems like she has wanted this man since she was 18 years old. And the fact that she has this opportunity to take the chance, she can take it. But the thing is, if she had self work, if she had self love, she wouldn't have because she would have been like, I love my best friend.
Tonée Earle (17:36.151)
Right. Right.
Right.
Tonée Earle (17:48.247)
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (17:55.99)
Right.
Tonée Earle (18:02.082)
Right.
Tay Fawumi (18:02.418)
As much as I want to do this, I know that if she was still alive, this would not be an option. So why would I now just forego all of the years of my best friend spending a life with this man, having a baby, and like raising this whole family to think I'm just gonna cop you know control all add myself in. Like copy paste myself into this life and like his daughter's gonna accept that.
Tonée Earle (18:09.623)
Right.
Tonée Earle (18:13.932)
Right.
Tonée Earle (18:25.378)
Right.
Tonée Earle (18:30.626)
Right.
Tay Fawumi (18:31.251)
The family's gonna accept that and we're just gonna live happily ever after. S but I also think maybe this is a form of self-sabotage. Because yeah, because it's almost like she wanted to be impulsive. She wanted to kind of, you know, lean into what her flesh wants and she knew it wasn't gonna last long, but she was like, I just have to, you know, she just felt like I had to see for myself. So I don't know, like
Tonée Earle (18:34.646)
Right. Yeah.
Tonée Earle (18:42.273)
I can see that.
Tonée Earle (18:50.839)
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (18:57.301)
Right. Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (19:02.302)
for sure what I would diagnose her with, but I would definitely say it has like, you know, it definitely starts with the root on how she feels about herself and what does she think she deserves.
Tonée Earle (19:09.495)
Right. Right. And it cause it's weird because it felt like she had a good thing going. I mean, with the the guy at her I mean, again, I feel like dumb decisions because you're sleeping with somebody who works for you and works with you. but I I it felt like he genuinely liked her. It felt like he thought it could go somewhere. and you know, you're spending the night at his house three AM in the morning and whatnot. And then
Tay Fawumi (19:22.92)
You subordinate.
Tay Fawumi (19:29.406)
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (19:35.827)
Mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (19:36.779)
At the end of the series, she ends up with a beautiful chocolate man. And I'm just like, for I try not to play the race card and everything. But Robert was not that handsome of a guy compared to the worker. Bro, bro. Bro, and she got this this slim bodied, muscular man on a yacht at the end of the series.
Tay Fawumi (19:47.762)
Mm.
Tay Fawumi (19:52.593)
Not to blow up your life over. Not not to blow up your life over.
Tonée Earle (20:04.737)
So I'm just so I was really wondering why and and I feel like I will question this with every show I watch because it does feel forced, it feels systemic. I I was really wondering why they had to have her sleep with that white man under them circumstances.
Tay Fawumi (20:22.426)
Yes. And like have her like pining over him. Like I just I just hated how it's just like she foregoed all common sense when it came to him. She was really giving like the Lulu real bad and it was making me so sad because I'm just like, stand up, sis.
Tonée Earle (20:26.015)
Yes.
Tonée Earle (20:37.333)
Yes, I need exactly. Exactly.
I need TV series to stop doing that, like with our strong black women. Let them be strong black women with strong black men, because that exists in the world. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. I am just so tired of seeing these amazing women and oftentimes men too. Not saying that that doesn't happen. It just seems like it's
Tay Fawumi (21:07.259)
Mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (21:08.211)
Everywhere I go, every time I watch something, I will not see a a couple that's just two black people. It's just so hard to see. That's not like a sitcom, right? That's a re it's a it's a real series. It's a real series. It's it's good. It's good film. I mean, the fashion and just the fashion alone in this series. Carrie Washington's character was wearing them outfits. Everything else was so good. I just I get frustrated.
Tay Fawumi (21:16.817)
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (21:25.541)
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (21:29.915)
Don't want it.
Tonée Earle (21:36.929)
When it feels like TV doesn't want us to see ourselves in TV. And we are married to two beautiful black men. So that was just my one little gripe about her doing the things. My real issue is girl, you supposed to be a bad B. Why are you why are you sleeping with these men you ain't got no business sleeping with? Only for it to end with her being with some sexy chocolate white sexy chocolate black man. and we know nothing about him.
Tay Fawumi (21:40.613)
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (22:05.656)
Right. And I don't think also I would have loved if they would have had Robert trying to like pursue Eleanor and she swerved him. I would have loved that because I would have I would have loved for her to say maybe when we were younger and like this tension or whatever we had going on, but before Nancy, like after Nancy, this is this is no longer an option.
Tonée Earle (22:14.537)
Right. Right. That would have been
Tay Fawumi (22:34.989)
And I would just love that she would have just chose herself and her best friend in those moments and and and just acknowledge the elephant in the room. Yes, I am sexually attracted to you. Yes, I did want to be with you at some time, at some point, but you you chose Nancy. You didn't choose me. And I'm not going to allow you to make me second best now that she's dead. I choose myself. Cause that's another thing I was thinking about. I was like,
Tonée Earle (22:37.779)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Tonée Earle (22:46.742)
Right.
Right.
Tonée Earle (22:53.612)
Right.
Tonée Earle (22:59.413)
Right. Exactly.
Tay Fawumi (23:04.268)
Damn, sis, you gonna be you're okay with being number two? Because my thing is if he really wanted you, when you introduced him to Nancy, he would have swerved Nancy and focused continue continue to focus on you. And then he also brought up to her that her brother had a nerve to say that she was off limits. You telling me this a hundred years later? Why is this a why is this even a concern?
Tonée Earle (23:16.033)
Exactly. And
Tonée Earle (23:22.333)
Exactly. Exactly. And that's what scared you away?
What? Yeah, and I think I think just off the bat, I would feel really icky sleeping with whether I knew you or not, I'd be feel really icky sleeping with a man whose wife just died days ago. Like I would have to know this isn't love. Bro, it wasn't long. It wasn't long. It wasn't long. I would feel hor I would feel like I'm being used. I would feel like
Tay Fawumi (23:36.535)
Manipulation.
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (23:48.855)
Wasn't even six months. This wasn't even six months. It wasn't even a year. Like, this was weeks, weeks after she died. If that, like,
Tonée Earle (24:01.495)
he did use her. He did. And I feel like she has to have she he didn't care about her. And she had to have known that. And and I think that was a thing that I, you know, I guess I took points away from the series because it just didn't feel like a lot of Eleanor's actions matched up with what we did know about her. especially as a career woman and and and things like that. So that was my issue. But also they really had these girls breaking all types of girl code.
Tay Fawumi (24:01.527)
He did use her as a warm body. He didn't care about her.
Tonée Earle (24:30.583)
And I didn't like that. I did not like that.
Tay Fawumi (24:31.636)
No. It was a lot of secrets going on. Like it was just a it was just a lot of secrets. It was a lot of deception. It was a lot of sneakiness. I'm just like, are these and then at the end, I was thinking to myself, these hoes ain't friends for real. Like, there's just they are not friends for real because there's just no way you would be okay. Like when she's the last thing that Eleanor said to Nancy is so crazy.
Tonée Earle (24:39.445)
Yes, yes.
Tonée Earle (24:47.681)
They are they were not friends.
Tay Fawumi (25:00.779)
Like, you know, just saying, I am not going with you to go break up with this man you've been having an affair with. You got a good husband. Like, I mean, she was just going in and she was begging her to come with me because she was scared. She was scared. And you thought in your like, you know, telling her to get the hell out of my car. And da da da da. And you was so mean to her. Those are her last words. Now she did.
Tonée Earle (25:11.475)
All you bro bro
Tonée Earle (25:22.519)
She was so mean. Now she's that she was so mean. All you have to do is say, I'll pick up Chipotle on the way and I will go to the end of the world with you. Like, how you ain't get in the car with the girl? She's telling you she's scared. And she seemed scared. And it was all because she was crying. It was all because she didn't like the fact that Nancy was cheating on her man.
Tay Fawumi (25:38.485)
She seemed really scared. Like she kept crying. She was like
Tay Fawumi (25:49.909)
Mm-hmm. Cause I want your man. And I wouldn't do that to him because he doesn't deserve it.
Tonée Earle (25:54.317)
Because your man is so perfect, walking around like he getting ready to divorce her, acting like a plum fool, ca a drunkard who makes poor business decisions, like any other mediocre white man who inherits a business. And, you know, now starts treating his wife like like trash. And so Eleanor obviously didn't know that. And it it almost feels like if Eleanor did, she still wouldn't have thought any ill will of Robert because of how infatuated she was with that man, which Robert was surprised, and I'm like.
Tay Fawumi (25:59.337)
He's a drunk.
Tay Fawumi (26:05.383)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (26:20.362)
Robber's the prize.
Tonée Earle (26:24.291)
houseway, neither here nor there. But that but that was the thing that I think that was the thing that really turned me off from Eleanor was when I had seen how she was reacting to her friend in distress because I felt like I felt like Nancy's character had made it pretty clear she was scared to meet up with this person. And and especially since I will say they did not know that Nancy's stepfather had kind of came back into the picture.
Tay Fawumi (26:35.817)
Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (26:43.442)
Yes.
Tay Fawumi (26:52.263)
Mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (26:53.025)
But you did know about her past. You knew enough about her past to know that if this is woman is scared of somebody, I should probably go with her. And you didn't. And she ended up dead and it's your fault. I'm just kidding, it's not her fault. But still, I didn't like it.
Tay Fawumi (27:07.438)
She should she should definitely take some of the take some of that heartache, some of that not blame, because you're right, it's not her fault. She had nothing to do with homeboy taking her out. But my thing is that wouldn't have happened if she went.
Tonée Earle (27:16.576)
Right.
Right.
Tonée Earle (27:23.267)
I mean, you know, we we don't know. We don't know. He may have been able to hold, maybe because we because that last scene, I said, okay. So Mary been walking around like a like a poor, desperate housewife this entire time, and all of a sudden she got some balls, whatever. but but yeah, I mean we don't know. But I do I do feel like it it may it was clear that Eleanor.
Tay Fawumi (27:26.024)
They'd have jumped him.
Tonée Earle (27:52.991)
Eleanor, I I still don't even understand Eleanor because with this series, you are learning a lot of the stuff that led up to the murder late. Like you're learning it kind of last minute, which is why yeah, at the end, which is why it's kind of a slow burn because just like, why do I care about these characters? But that that again is why now I'm getting up re upset because not only did you not go with her the day she was crying.
Tay Fawumi (28:05.373)
Mm. At the end.
Tonée Earle (28:22.549)
And begging you to come with her to meet with somebody who she was getting ready to end things with, and she's telling you she's scared, but then you sleep with her man after she's been killed by this man. That is dirty. That is not girl code. This this series should have been called The Women Who Break Girl Code because it is I think it went beyond imperfection. These women were weird, these women were very weird. It was giving weird.
Tay Fawumi (28:42.139)
Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (28:45.606)
Mm. It was giving weird. For sure. I can't wait for us to talk about Mary. I got so many thoughts on her.
Tonée Earle (28:54.339)
I got Mary's probably gonna be a very long episode because
I love and hate that hoe. Like I her she played that character. She played that character. Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (29:06.31)
She did, she did, but I but once again, Mary was down bad, like stand up, sis. Like, I can't believe she allowed that man to literally ruin her life. Ruin her life in the worst way, in the worst way.
Tonée Earle (29:19.053)
Ruin her life. Ruin her life.
Yes. But we will get to Mary on the next time we come back to Barn the Brain. I think this is gonna be a pretty short episode because all we really needed to do was just go in on Eleanor, which wasn't very hard because they just gave us a script worth of things we could go in on. but it's it seems like we don't have a diagnosis for Eleanor because we don't really have enough information. But if I had to guess, I think the girl got some serious, serious, serious daddy issues for her to be.
Tay Fawumi (29:41.721)
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (29:48.429)
Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (29:54.577)
Mm-hmm. Yeah, definitely serious like issues with interpersonal relationships. Definitely a lot of issues with self-love, self-worth. just seems like she has maybe some fear of abandonment, things like that. I was thinking like maybe a personality disorder for her, but I think I would just need to know a little bit more information now.
Tonée Earle (29:55.233)
acting the way she did in the show.
Tonée Earle (30:11.319)
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (30:18.347)
Wow.
Tay Fawumi (30:21.829)
I could definitely probably give you some diagnosis for Mary and for homegirl Nancy. Yeah, for sure.
Tonée Earle (30:26.241)
Nancy. Yeah. Yeah. They got they got tons of trauma. but one thing I did want to mention about Eleanor's character was how she bailed out Mary's son that we had learned about. and she did not and she I thought it was interesting because she bailed out Mary's son, who has a gambling addiction, and she paid off Mary's son's bookie, I guess. And then
Tay Fawumi (30:33.337)
They do.
Tay Fawumi (30:40.644)
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (30:54.253)
Mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (30:55.859)
Sh at the time she was doing that, Nancy was being unalived. And so she needed an alibi. She needed to be able to prove that she wasn't going to that she wasn't, she couldn't have caused the murder because she was doing something else. And instead, sh she did not want to rat out Mary's son because he was on probation. And if it was found that he had done this, then he could end up in jail. So instead
Tay Fawumi (31:01.591)
Bing. Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (31:14.189)
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (31:20.483)
Mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (31:26.515)
She asks the man who works for her that she's sleeping with to hold her to say, I was with you. I came back at this time, remember? So I think I I do think Elean we have to give Eleanor a bit more credit. I just think she's a bad friend. I think she can be very calculated. I think she can be very wise. I think she's out for herself. And I think she runs all these foundations and nonprofits.
Tay Fawumi (31:31.628)
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (31:46.659)
Mm.
Tonée Earle (31:55.655)
to make herself feel better on the outside. But the reality is she doesn't know how to hold a good relationship with people because she's not a very good friend. That's my thought.
Tay Fawumi (32:04.777)
Yeah.
Yeah, I think she's she's a good friend first surface level. Like the friends the friends that you have like the dr you know, go out with drinks and have dinner with like once every six months, the good conversation. I wouldn't like I wouldn't say she's a good like friend that you like a ride a die. Absolutely not. Except for this case where she did look out for Mary's son. And I think the only reason she didn't tell Mary is because he asked her not to, because he was like
Tonée Earle (32:11.83)
Yeah.
Tonée Earle (32:16.233)
Yeah. Yeah. Good conversation. Yeah. Yeah.
Tonée Earle (32:25.514)
Yeah, mm mm no.
Tay Fawumi (32:35.881)
My mom has a lot going on. I don't want to stress her. Da da da. So I think, you know, that shows that, you know, she has a little bit of character because she was trying to stay true to the fact that, okay. And he was an adult now. He is over 18. So, you know, he was just like, please don't tell her. And I think he wanted to tell his mom just not right then and there, just because Nancy just died. And I think he he was thinking about his mom's mental health. And he was just like, this is just gonna be one more thing.
Tonée Earle (32:57.268)
Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (33:04.456)
that she now has to worry about.
Tonée Earle (33:06.805)
know terry i think i think eleanor's character kind of got off on the fact that her two best friends kids liked her more than they liked their own mothers i i i don't know i don't know i think i think she felt like the cool god mom yeah i you know what i mean you i felt like she really appreciated the fact that you wouldn't go to your mom about this you're coming to me i i felt like i saw signs of that because i because it did seem weird and she and when
Tay Fawumi (33:21.524)
Auntie Auntie L.
Tay Fawumi (33:31.466)
Mm.
Tonée Earle (33:36.969)
Mary learned that Eleanor had did that and she was like, He's my son. I've been like, No, he ain't. That's your godson or your nephew or whatever you want to call him. But why would you sit there and potentially get yourself arrested for a son that is not yours? That's weird. And
Tay Fawumi (33:54.142)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah, she said get get your own family or something like that. I was like, ooh.
Tonée Earle (33:58.815)
She did. She did. She had to say that. She had to say that because I it really did feel like sh she it it did feel like she's imposing. It felt like she didn't want to go through the work. Cause I mean, and maybe that's another maybe that's what makes the series so good is you have this one woman who's married to a man who's comes from wealth. They have the big house, they live in luxury. She got all designer clothes and things like that. And and in the beginning, the marriage is actually really beautiful.
Tay Fawumi (34:06.858)
She was imposing.
Tonée Earle (34:28.353)
You also have this other family that is married. They have kids. The wife stays at home. The dad works, but he's in and out of jobs for whatever reason. And you know, in the beginning that probably was good and they had all these ideas and things. But then that goes sour because the wife realizes she basically sold so much of her time and her years for for nothing but but family, I guess. I I guess it's worth something.
I mean, I don't want to sound so cynical about not having family. I think that is great. But even Mary realized she she all she got is the kids. and so you have Eleanor, who is the single woman who, you know, it seems like by all accounts is kind of living the best of both worlds because while she doesn't have any biological children, she's kind of
Tay Fawumi (34:57.8)
Yes.
Tonée Earle (35:12.311)
you know, making herself a part of these families where these kids trust her, they go to her, they call on her when they need things. And at the same time, she's made she's she also comes from wealth and has money and and things like that. So she's kind of living the best of both worlds without having to go through any of the work of creating her own family. And I really do wonder it I I I wish the series would have given us a little bit more background on Eleanor. Cause it would have been n I felt like I understand why Nancy was the way she was and I understand a little bit why Mary was the way she was.
Tay Fawumi (35:23.4)
Right.
Tay Fawumi (35:35.23)
Mm.
Tay Fawumi (35:42.332)
Mm-hmm.
Tonée Earle (35:42.585)
because she was preyed on as a young person. and not not like a child, but I think she was just coming into her work, her career, and her boss you know, makes a pass at her. So I w it would have been nice to know a little bit more about Eleanor to really understand what motivated her. because other than that, I just can't help but hate her. And it would be nice not to hate her.
Tay Fawumi (35:45.734)
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (35:52.508)
Mm.
Tay Fawumi (35:56.7)
Mm-hmm.
Tay Fawumi (36:02.716)
Yeah.
Tay Fawumi (36:07.632)
It would be nice, but yeah, she suck she sucked. Boo. Tomatoes, tomatoes. Yes. She is.
Tonée Earle (36:09.027)
Yeah. She did suck. She did but but we love the acting. We always love good Carrie Washington character because she's so cool. yes.
